A major difference between anaerobic respiration and anaerobic fermentation is that the latter uses organic molecules within the cell as final electron acceptors. Anaerobic respiration can occur without any oxygen present but will not produce additional ATP (energy) molecules. Anaerobic fermentation occurs when oxygen is expelled and replaced with carbon dioxide or nitrogen molecules.
