We know that Mercury is more dense. The density of Mercury is 13.6 times greater than that of water. We require only a 760 mm column of mercury to pull a vacuum, but we need a 1000 cm column of water to do the same thing. We also know that water it is not suitable because it vaporizes to fill the available space.
