Gases are usually not close to one another in space; instead, there is much empty space between the molecules or atoms of a gas. This is why gas molecules or atoms can move rather freely around. Solids, on the other hand, are arranged in rigid patterns that do not allow for much movement of molecules or atoms. The molecules or atoms can vibrate to a small extent within their fixed positions. A single molecule or atom is surrounded by the same neighbors all the time.
