NADH produces an electron in Complex-I at higher energy level. However, energy level decreases while moving from Complex-I to Complex-III, creating an energy gradient, while the electron is moved on. Hence more ATPs (3) are produced. On the other hand FADH2 produces electron in Complex-II, which is at lower energy level as compared to Complex-I. Hence only two ATPs are produced, as FADH2 has skipped Complex-I.
