Chapter 9 - Section 9.1 - Introduction - Problem - Page 333: 9.1

Answer

The answer can be found in the image below. The ether compounds are boxed-in yellow while the alcohol compounds are boxed-in green.

Work Step by Step

1) Both ethers and alcohols have a single-bonded oxygen in their formulas. To easily find them, you have to first look for single-bonded oxygen atoms. All oxygen atoms which are double bonded are automatically excluded. 2) To distinguish an ether from an alcohol, you have to look at the atoms they are bonded to. If the oxygen atom is bonded to two alkyl groups, then it is an ether. However, if it is bonded to a carbon atom and a hydrogen atom, then it is an alcohol. 3) To determine the classification of the alcohol, all you have to do is count the number of alkyl groups attached to the carbon atom the alcohol group is bonded to. 1 alkyl group: $1^{\circ}$ primary alcohol 2 alkyl groups: $2^{\circ}$ secondary alcohol 3 alkyl groups: $3^{\circ}$ tertiary alcohol
