Chapter 16 - Section 16.4 - The Work of Running Water - Concept Checks - Page 480: 2

Answer

A stream transports its load in three ways: as dissolved load, suspended load, and bed load. The dissolved load consists of minerals and ions dissolved in the water, carried along without being visible. The suspended load consists of fine particles like silt and clay that remain suspended in the water column. The bed load consists of larger, heavier particles like pebbles, gravel, and sand that roll or bounce along the streambed. Of the three, the suspended load moves most slowly, as it is carried by the water's turbulence but does not remain in direct contact with the streambed.
