Chapter 16 - Section 16.8 - Floods and Flood Control - Concept Checks - Page 496: 1

Answer

Floods can occur in different ways, and four main types of floods are distinguished. Riverine floods happen when rivers overflow their banks due to heavy rainfall or snowmelt. Coastal floods occur along coastlines due to high tides, storm surges, or hurricanes pushing seawater onto land. Flash floods are rapid-onset floods resulting from intense rainfall or sudden releases of water from dams. Urban floods, on the other hand, are influenced by urban development, as impervious surfaces and inadequate stormwater management lead to increased surface runoff in cities, overwhelming drainage systems and causing flooding.
