Chapter 17 - Section 17.8 - The Geologic Work of Groundwater - Concept Checks - Page 527: 1

Answer

Groundwater creates caverns through a process called dissolution. Caverns form in limestone or other soluble rock types when slightly acidic groundwater seeps through fractures and joints in the rock. The water dissolves and carries away small amounts of the rock material over time, enlarging the openings. As this process continues over thousands of years, larger voids are created, resulting in the formation of caverns.
