Answer
Middle-latitude dry regions exist due to the rain shadow effect created by mountain ranges. When moisture-laden air approaches a mountain range, it is forced to rise, cool, and release precipitation on the windward side of the mountains. As the air descends on the leeward side, it becomes drier and creates rain shadows, resulting in dry regions, such as steppes and deserts, on the leeward side of the mountains.
