Answer

Volcanism can lead to global warming under certain circumstances. While most volcanic eruptions result in a cooling effect due to the release of sulfur dioxide and the formation of sulfate aerosols, some eruptions emit large quantities of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases. CO2 is a potent greenhouse gas that traps outgoing infrared radiation, contributing to the warming of the Earth's surface and the lower atmosphere. Although volcanic emissions of CO2 are relatively small compared to human activities, such as burning fossil fuels, they can still have some impact on the climate system over long periods.
