The formation of the planets from the solar nebula occurred approximately 4.6 billion years ago. The solar nebula was a cloud of gas and dust left over from the formation of the Sun. As the nebula contracted under gravity, it started to spin and flatten into a rotating disk. In the center, the protostar (early Sun) formed, while the remaining material in the disk started to clump together due to collisions and gravitational attraction. These clumps, called planetesimals, continued to grow by accretion, capturing more gas and dust around them. Over time, some planetesimals grew into protoplanets, and further collisions and accretion led to the formation of the planets we have in our solar system today.
