Answer

The rainwater was highly acidic early in the Earth's history. This was due to continuous volcanic eruptions which lead to the release of huge amounts of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere. Sulfur dioxide combined with water in the atmosphere and resulted in the formation of hydrochloric acid. This made the rainwater highly acidic.
