Chapter 23 - Section 23.3 - Nuclear Energy - Concept Checks - Page 713: 3

Answer

Pros of nuclear energy: Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas which greatly contributes to global warming and nuclear power plants unlike fossil fuels do not release carbon dioxide. Cons of nuclear energy: The cost to build and install safety equipment in a nuclear power plant is very high. During natural disasters like an earthquake, there are high possibilities of dangerous accidents like leakage of radioactive elements or other malfunctions which can lead to huge disaster. Leakage and malfunctions can also happen without natural disasters. Nuclear power plants needs to maintained carefully at all times. Disposal of nuclear waste must be done properly. Improper disposal of them can again lead to huge problems. The production of nuclear weapons in many countries is also considered a con of nuclear energy.
