When water evaporates, dissolved minerals and salts precipitate and collect, forming evaporites. This mechanism is most commonly seen in arid or semi-arid locations with high evaporation rates, such as salty lakes, playas, or coastal areas. The concentration of dissolved minerals increases as water evaporates until saturation is reached, causing the minerals to crystallise and create evaporite deposits. Rock salt (halite), gypsum, and potassium salts (potash) are examples of evaporites that are extensively employed in commercial applications such as salt manufacture and fertiliser making.
