Chapter 6 - Population and Migration - Review and Discussion Questions - Page 283: 1

Answer

The pattern of where people dwell is referred to as population distribution. The distribution of the world's population is unequal. People are few in sparsely populated areas. Densely populated areas have a high population density. Living in sparsely populated areas can be difficult. These are typically inhospitable environments, such as Antarctica. Antarctica's nature makes it a difficult place to live; with cold temperatures, a lack of flora, and geographical isolation, few people live there. Densely inhabited areas, such as Western Europe and the United States East Coast, are habitable. This could be due to level terrain, a favorable climate, and the availability of natural resources and freshwater. Within a country, population distribution is likewise uneven. Locations with favorable conditions are often more densely populated than those with less favorable characteristics. North Wales, for example, has a lower population density than South Wales. Around Snowdonia, the relief is mountainous; nevertheless, in the south, the relief is flat and readily built on.
