Chapter 2 - Describing Motion: Kinematics in One Dimension - Questions - Page 41: 17

Answer

The object starts with a positive velocity, and speeds up for 45 s or so at a constant positive acceleration, until it has a velocity of about +37 m/s. The acceleration then rapidly decreases to zero, and at about t = 50 s, the object reaches a maximum velocity of about 39 m/s. The object then begins to slow down, but still move in a positive direction. At t = 90 s it comes to rest and stays at rest until about t = 108 s. Then the object begins to move in a positive direction again, with a large acceleration at first, then with a smaller acceleration. At t = 125 s, the object is moving to the right and moving faster and faster.

Work Step by Step

The slope of the velocity versus time curve is the acceleration. Each change in the slope will correspond to a specific pattern of movement.
