understanding Twain's use of parody and tropes
Structure:
Discuss the feud between the Sheperdsons and Grangerfords. Lead a discussion about the possible origins of the feud. Elicit ideas about why Twain did not reveal the source of the feud. Compare to the feud between the Montagues and Capulets, and lead students to realizing that the Romeo & Juliet references in earlier chapters were an intentional set-up for this feud.
