Maggie Nelson

Harry Dodge
Harry is Maggie's spouse, who is fluidly gendered. Through the course of the narrative, they recieve gender-affirming medical treatment, including testosterone (hormone) therapy and top surgery (double mastectomy). Their experiences with gender fluidity and medical transition are explored in context of feminist and family theory, as well as LGBTQ+ rights.
Igasho "Iggy" Nelson
Iggy is Maggie and Harry's child, whom Maggie gives birth to towards the end of the book. He catches a toxin, and is admitted to hospital for treatment, but is later discharged.
Unnamed Stepson
Harry's nine-year-old son, Maggie's stepson, and eventually Iggy's older brother. Provides a character through which Maggie explores the complexities of 'family', including step-family and sibling relationships.
Reverend Starbuck
Loreleai Starbuck is the 'metaphysical' reverend who officiates Harry and Maggie's marriage.
Harry's Mother
Harry's mother dies of breast cancer, which spread to her spine, liver, and brain. Her story is told alongside Iggy's birth story, which contrasts the beginning and the end of life.
