The protagonist of the novel. His family was killed off on the night of the assault and was forced to go live with his aunt.
Fake Ploeg Senior
Father of Fake Ploeg Junior, a nazi collaborator, and neighbor of the protagonist Anton Steenwijk.
Peter Steenwijk
Brother of Anton. He was also killed during the night of the assault. He seems to be impulsive and quite quick to act as shown in the beginning. Little else is known about him.
Fake Ploeg Junior
Son of Fake Ploeg Senior who got murdered on the day of the assault. He was a classmates of Anton before the tragic event. He was later seen in an anti-communism protest outside of Anton's apartment.
Cor Takes aka Gijs
He was involved in the assassination of Fake Ploeg Senior the night of the assault together with Truus. He unknowingly got Anton's family killed by assassinating Ploeg in front of the Kortewegs' house, who then moved the body in front of the Steenwijks' house. The Steenwijks' received the retaliation of the Nazis.
Karin Korteweg
Anton's old neighbor (the daughter of Mr. Korteweg) who lived in the house called Home At Last. She helps her father move Fake Ploeg's body in front of the Steenwijk's house after her is shot.
Mr. Korteweg
Anton's old neighbor who lived next door in the house called Home at Last. He made his daughter Karin move Fake Ploeg's body in front of the Steenwijk's house.
Saskia De Graaff
Anton's first wife, with whom he has his daughter Sandra.
Fake Ploeg Senior
Chief Inspector of Police and a Nazi sympathizer known as the greatest murderer and traitor in Haarlem.
Geritt-Jan
Anton's dentist, who convinces him to go to the march against nuclear weapons.
Mr De Graaff
Saskia's father, through whom Anton meets Cor Takes.
Liesbeth
Anton's second wife, with whom he has his son Peter.
Truus
The woman who was in the cell with Anton the night of the assault. We later learn she was involved in the assassination together with Takes.
The Van Liempts
Anton's uncle and aunt with whom he lives and grows up after his parents are killed in the assault.
Schulz
A Nazi officer who dies trying to save Anton from a Spitfire.
