The Barsetshire Chronicles: Framley Parsonage Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Barchester Cathedral

Barchester Cathedral is a symbol of apprehension. Rev. Mark does everything, including betraying Lady Lufton to get a position in Barchester Cathedral as a clergy. At last, Rev. Mark gets a chance to preach at Barchester, and he feels that he has actualized his dream at a young age at the Barchester Cathedral.

Fraud

Nathaniel Sowerby is a symbol of fraud. The reader learns that Sowerby is influential and rich because of fraudulent financial dealings. For instance, Sowerby uses innocent people like Rev. Mark to dupe them into becoming loan guarantors. When Sowerby uses Mark as a guarantor for $900, he never pays the loan, and the burden of repaying the loan is shifted to Rev. Mark. Sowerby uses this tactic of duping incident victims into guaranteeing him until he becomes very wealthy and influential.

The symbolism of humanity

Humanity is symbolized by Lady Lufton's willingness to help Rev. Mark achieve his dream. When Rev. Mark is in his twenties, Lady Lufton allows him to work in her parish as a cleric. In addition, Lady Lufton is a mentor who advises Rev. Mark to be patient and build his career progressively without being overambitious. Therefore, Lady Lufton is the epitome of true humanity because she is determined to give a helping hand unconditionally.
