    Blogging the Book

    Kind of Activity:

    Long-term Project

    Objective:

    Students will record their reactions, questions, and track characters and themes throughout the duration of the novel

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.11-12.6, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.11-12.10

    Structure:

    The Boat recounts scenes with childhood trauma, violence (both racially motivated and general), poverty, parental illness, separation from parents/family, and immigration. Racial slurs and drug usage are also mentioned in some of the stories, though not as any main storyline. This material may be triggering to some students and the teacher should warn the class ahead of time about these occurrences....
