The Book of Disquiet Characters

The Book of Disquiet Character List

Guedes

Guedes is one of the speakers in the autobiography. He is also a hypothetical version of the author, Pessoa. Guedes represents a version of Pessoa that wrote the book to be a window into his life and darkest secrets. According to Guedes, the book is meant to describe his soul and to analyze it from every angle possible. He also says that he was born in a time when the world had lost faith and hope in the future hence, he only saw value in the things he could dream about, the rest was inconsequential.

Soares

Soares is another form of the writer. Unlike Guedes who pours out his emotions into his book and trusts that his audience with his personal information, Soares claims the book is a confession but his audience should not expect him to say anything and everything. Soares deems he was born in a time when people not only lost faith in God and the past but had found another based on science. The youth in his generation believed that science promised a better future.

Pessoa

In his autobiography, Pessoa holds different conversations with the different forms of himself. In these conversations, he agrees seems to agree with both versions of his life despite their dissimilarity. Pessoa believes that he has existed in two generations, both of which demanded a different version of himself.
