“The Book of Joan” by Lidia Yuknavitch is a science fiction novel set in a dystopian world. Lidia Yuknavitch is an award-winning writer, who is not only known for her fiction, but also her nonfiction work and the book called “The Misfit’s Manifesto”.
From the title itself can be derived that the novel will have some type of allusion to the Joan of Arc. The novel is set in a dystopian future where the Earth has been completely destroyed by wars, and the remnants of humanity are surviving on a platform called the CIEL. What’s interesting is that the remaining humans have evolved, they lost their sex-traits and became uniform species with inscriptions on their bodies. When a rebellion rises at CIEL, a song about a child hero called Joan is the only force that can reunite and bring peace.
The novel explores themes of war, human destruction of the home planet, gender and corruption. It was first published in 2017.
