Like Fingers (Simile)

While depicting their childhood bedroom, Lana and Melora described the trees outside their window: “The bedroom we shared with our mother faced a canopy of fronds like the fingers of a dozen hands.” The image of the fronds looking like fingers on hands emphasizes the unity the girls felt in the house, while also giving the fronds a slightly unsettling quality.

Like Shuffling a Deck of Cards (Simile)

While reflecting on the double-agent situation unfolding at Mandala, Lincoln imagines sorting through his thoughts: “Then I empty the list and begin again, like shuffling a deck of cards.” He uses the image of a deck of cards being reshuffled to suggest the automatic aspect of his thoughts. They are like a deck of cards in that he moves them around automatically, without actively analyzing them too much.

Mandala's Network is a Cosmos (Metaphor)

While Roxy is uploading her memories, the narrator describes it “all emptying into a cosmos that writhes and twists like an expanding galaxy.” This celestial imagery highlights the vastness of Mandala's digital empire as well as the sprawling space she has placed her memories into.

Like Fawns (Simile)

While looking at Comstock's motorcycle, Chris notices how small everyone's bicycles look beside it: “Comstock’s dented black Harley-Davidson was parked amid a bevy of bicycles that looked like cowering fawns beside it.” This comparison not only shows how much more intimidating the motorcycle is than the bicycles, but it also shows how Comstock himself is a markedly different person than most of the SweetSpot employees.

Party is a Fairy Tale (Metaphor)

While describing a party thrown by Stephanie, Hannah says that “This, too, is a fairy tale, and after I grow up, these parties will become part of the lost mythical land of my childhood.” She uses this fairy tale memory to express how one day this party will be nothing more than a memory so distant it will no longer seem real.
