Andrew's Remorse
Andrew Price creates the online smear campaign because he hates his father and wants to scupper his chances of holding office. He hacks into the system and he comes up with the name The Ghost of Barry Fairbrother to make himself sound more official or grown up. Yet when he sees that his campaign is actually working and his father is being ostracized, he feels remorseful, and tries to make up for his actions.
Andrew's Feelings About His Mother
Andrew hates seeing his mother abused by his father. He hates watching as she is humiliated verbally and bullied; yet he also hates her too, because he feels that she should have realized what life married to Simon would be like, and married him anyway. He is protective of her, but blames her too for her situation.
Fats' Feelings About Being True To Oneself
Fats feels that everyone should be true to themselves, and honest about themselves. He believed that at least ninety per cent of people were ashamed of where they came from and who they were as people. Yet he is perhaps the most in denial about the shame that he feels regarding where he comes from. He was adopted as a baby but is going through a phase of hating his parents for not really being his parents. Although he thinks others are ashamed of their roots, he is more ashamed than anyone.
Charitable Gifts
It is observed by the Narrator that gifts to the poor also benefit the rich as well; in the context of the novel, the donor benefits both with a tax deduction, and also by generating good feeling that can be harnessed and used at the voting booths.
Krystal's Life Goals
All that Krystal wants out of her life is for it to end. She feels as though she has achieved her goal when she takes an overdose and kills herself, knowing that she is going to be reunited with her brother.
