To make students aware of the role of the novel in popular culture

Structure:

Ask students if they have encountered Catcher outside of the classroom, in any pop cultural contexts, in history books, etc. Talk about where it has come up for them and what their impressions were about the novel before they started reading it in class. Discuss how it has influenced literature, in particular Young Adult literature, in the decades since its publication.
