The Coming Plague Background

The Coming Plague Background

Coming Plague, The: Newly Emerging Diseases in a World Out of Balance is a global health book written by Laurie Gerrett and was published by Penguin Books on 01 October 1995.

The book entails the real-life events that have shaken the world in the 20th century. From the Rwandan war, to the inhabitable landfill sites dominating Cairo, Garrett seeks to educate people on the medical implications these events have caused. She touches on emerging diseases such as AIDs and Lyme disease as well as ones that are starting to rise again, such as Tuberculosis and Cholera. The book touches on the history of epidemics and the preventable factors towards it.

The New York Times stated that the book was "A frightening vision of the future and a deeply unsettling one.” The Economist also praised it, stating "The book is ambitious, but it succeeds...[its] scope is encyclopedic, its mass of detail startling."
