The Day of the Triffids Irony

Irony of the Triffids

It is ironic that the triffids that would eventually endanger humanity began as nothing more than a mere cash crop being harvested for their fluids.

Irony of Reliance on Sight

Man’s highly developed eyes were what allowed him to create technological marvels that allowed him mastery over the planet. It is terribly ironic that this same highly developed set of eyes and his reliance on it that ends up being the very thing that damns humanity.

Irony of Man’s Superiority

It is ironic that man’s so called superiority hinges upon his ability to see. Once that was taken out of the equation it was surprising how quickly civilization and everything that was held dear quickly fell apart.

Irony of Civilization

The novel posits that man’s civility is rooted in the fact that everyone most everyone is safe and basic needs are met. Once scarcity kicks in suddenly mankind devolves into barbarism.

Irony of The Cold War

It is ironic that despite the general lack of evidence to support their speculations the Narrator/Bill keeps making inferences that the global disasters are man-made, specifically Soviet in origin. This speaks of man's greater collective fear of the specter of traditional warfare, ironic given the immediate threat that the triffids present to mankind.
