Divine beauty
“The fair Miranda” was famous for her divine beauty. In spite of the fact that she put herself into the “uninclos’d religious house”, Miranda had more suitors than any other young “lady of quality.” Not to mention that she “became the envy of the whole sisterhood.” The girl had “bright hair, and hazel-eyes, all full of love and sweetness.” “No art could make a face so fair as hers by nature.” Her “every look, every motion charm’d,” and “her black dress shew’d the luster of her face and neck.” She was “gay”, “yet so modest, so nobly reserv’d, without formality or stiffness,” that one who “look’d on her would have imagin’d her soul the twin-angel of her body.” This imagery evokes a feeling of fascination and admiration that people usually feel when they meet Miranda.
Misfortunes
The young Prince Henrick was left with a broken heart. Betrayed by his own family, he had to find a way to rebuild his life. After “a thousand reflections on his hard fate,” and “bemoaning himself,” and “blaming his cruel stars,” that had doomed him “to die so young, after infinity of sighs and tears,” he was rudely interrupted. Those intruders were the killers that his brother sent to kill him. The young Prince didn’t even have time to mount, “being walked some paces from his horse.” Unfortunately for him, there wasn’t anything he could do to protect himself. This imagery evokes a feeling of pity, for the young Prince is an innocent victim here.
Obsessed
Miranda was obsessed with an idea of making the Prince Henrick love her. However, “all her reasonings, false and vicious,” he “despis’d, pity’d the error of her love, and was proof against all she could plead.” Regardless “his silence, which left her in doubt and more tormented her,” she didn’t stop pursuing him with her letters, “varying her style.” Sometimes it was “all wanton, loose and raving.” Sometimes “feigning a virgin-modesty all over, accusing herself, blaming her conduct, and sighing her destiny.” This imagery evokes a feeling of desperateness. Miranda’s unhealthy obsession is both tiring and frightening.
