Pascual Duarte
Pascual is the bad-luck-ridden protagonist and narrator of The Family of Pascual Duarte. He lives an agonizing existence filled with misfortune, eventually leading him to murder his mother and end up in prison. The novel is told from his perspective in the future in his jail cell awaiting execution for his crimes.
Rosario Duarte
Rosario is Pascual's sister. She is a controlling woman who knows how to manipulate their father; he is always taking her side. Over the course of the novel, she decides to leave the Duarte's household and work as a prostitute on the streets.
Lola Duarte
Lola is Pascual's first wife, who after their marriage, begins to share on his misfortune. Throughout the novel, she loses two of her sons: the first- through a miscarriage, and the second, eleven months after his birth. Both Pascual and her dearly lament their losses.
Pascual's mother
Pascual's mother is a vicious, immoral woman. She is an alcoholic, and constantly abuses her children (including Pascual); as well, she is unfaithful to her husband, Esteban. This leads Pascual to be enraged at her actions, ultimately killing her.
Esteban Duarte
Esteban Duarte is a violent character. He is Pacual Duarte's father and eventually dies from a dog bite.
Esperanza
Esperanza is Pascual's new wife. Pascual cowardly leaves her after killing his own mother. She is a very religious character.
