This incomprehensible world (Metaphor)
Janet feels like an alien in this bizarre world. There are so many things she can’t understand no matter how hard she tries. Her world seems to be so simple in comparison with this place we call our home. Everything puzzles her, even “girlie magazines.” Janet says she can’t “make head or tail of them.” It is quite easy to understand Janet, for she has been living in the different world for many years and that place has little in common with ours. However, Janet does her best to learn more, her heart and mind are open.
Lose it (Metaphor)
He told her she was so “ball-breaking, shitty, stone, scum-bag, mother-fucking, plug-ugly that no normal male could keep an erection within half a mile of her.” Janet looked puzzled, she didn’t really know what insults were. The man started “recovering his cool” when Janet decided that it was enough and hit him. Her hit wasn’t that strong, it was more humiliating than painful. Frankly speaking, nobody expected her to do that.
Anger (Metaphor)
It was predictable outcome. Janet wasn’t that kind of a person who could hide her feelings or lie. The moment that man opened his mouth determined everything, he had to know better than insult her. Janet “slapped him.” It “wasn’t meant to hurt.” It was “a great big stinging theatrical performance, a cue for insults and further fighting.” The marine – one of the guests on that party – was shocked, that woman dared to hit a man. He shouted that he was going to “cream” her, but the truth was that he didn’t have a chance with her. Janet could easily break his bones.
No one (Simile)
She asked herself who she was and couldn’t find the answer. What was her “brand name?” Her “new face” was “a puffy mask.” She was as “skinny as a beanpole.” She wasn’t “Jeannine.” She wasn’t “Janet.” She wasn’t “Joanna.” The only one thing she was sure of was that her face was really “impressive.” She looked like “a blond Hallowe’en ghoul on top of the S.S. uniform.” Readers would learn her name and her role in the story later.
Innocent (Simile)
The man accused Janet of acting “like a virgin.” He really seemed to be unable to realize that his words, actions, and even gazes could be insulting. He was used to treating women as objects, so he couldn’t believe that Janet could find him repulsive. Saying that she was like a virgin, the man wanted to insult her, to point out her immaturity. Come to think about it, the problem was more complicated. He thought he had a right to command whilst she was supposed to obey. His arrogance proved to be immeasurable.
