Jacques Cormery
Jacques Cormery is the main protagonist in the story. He is the son of Lucie, his deaf and mute mother and Henri, his father who dies while Jacques is still an infant. Jacques grew up together with his mother, grandmother and uncle with a poor lifestyle, though he is smart and manages to get out of poverty. He becomes a successful young man, but always wishes to know more about his father and where he comes from.
Lucie
Lucie is the mother of Jacques. She is a calm and soft woman and became pregnant with Jacques when she was young. She is deaf and mute, and needs a lot of help, which is why she lives with her mother and her deaf and mute brother. Her mother is more of a mother figure for Jacques than she herself is, as she can’t bring herself to ever punish her son.
Henri
Henri is Jacques's father, and he died when he was only 29 years old, during the war in France. His death leaves Jacques without a father, and together with his mother and extended family. Jacques wishes to know more about his father, though no one wants to tell him anything about him, and no one recognizes his name.
