The Future (2023) is author Naomi Alderman's novel, which envisions a world run by a few billionaires called "The Future." Those billionaires have the world on a crash course towards climate destruction because of their decision to pollute the Earth to make more money. However, they don't feel the effects of their actions because they live in secret, lavish bunkers. In those bunkers, they have teams of security, are able to artificially control the weather, and utilize exceptionally dangerous new weapons. Together, the billionaires try to make as much money as possible while surviving in lavish conditions. Most are not good people and don't care about the people around them.
Advance reviews for Alderman's novel, which will be published in November 2023, were largely positive. In their review of the novel, Kirkus Reviews wrote that The Future is "A smart, engrossing fable about digital technology and human community." Publisher's Weekly called Alderman's prose "eminently quotable" and praised the novel's "endless intrigue and surprising twists" which "keep the pages turning."
