Disrespectful or irreverent actions towards sacred objects or figures.

Cantankerous

Argumentative, Characterized by a bad temper.

Convoluted

Complex; hard to follow; not clear.

Ergo

Refers to the conclusion of an earlier argument in logic.

Felonious

Relating to a crime. Criminal.

Genuflect

Bend the knee to the ground. Frequently used in reference to prayer.

Geodes

Rocks made from the lava of volcanoes. They have hollow insides and around the interior there are white crystals or purple amethysts. Geodes are Jeannette’s favorite type of rock to collect.

Gestate

The process of carrying a being in the womb.

Glowering

Scowling, Staring with an angry look on one's face.

Indignant

Feeling annoyed by supposed unfair treatment.

Mantilla

Lace scarf worn over the head. Popular in Spain and is most often worn by women during traditional Catholic practices.

Oompahing

Sound made by a brass instrument such as a tuba. Characterized by a steady rhythm.

Ornate

Designed intricately with much detail; showy.

Serape

A shawl-like cloth worn mainly in Mexico.

Simony

Making a profit by selling sacred things. Often used in reference to the church and its members.

The Green Lantern

A house of prostitution near the highway Battle Mountain. Rose Mary calls the place a “cathouse” in which bad things happen but Jeannette and Brian are confused since they see no cats. Intrigued, Jeannette dares Brian to go up to the porch of the Green Lantern. Brian acquiesces and speaks to one of the women who explains that the Green Lantern is a place where men come and are treated nicely by women. After that day the women in the Green Lantern continue to wave at Brian though Jeannette continues to keep her distance.

Treadle

A pedal or lever operated by the foot as can be found on a sewing machine.

Usury

Charging interest on loans.

Warmonger

A negative term for an individual who wants to motivate a nation to enter into warfare.
