The irony of Paul's friendship making approach
Being quite lonely at the University of Toronto, Paul seeks to make some new friends at a nightclub. While there, he gives out some tablets to people in an effort to strike a friendship. However, it is quite ironic that what he thought would get him to know some new people and enable him to make some new friends gets one person dead and Paul has to flee for his life. He ends up at his half sister's place.
The irony of Paul being fired
After some graffiti is discovered in the hotel where both Paul and his half sister Vincent are employed. Paul, despite being unaware or responsible for the same gets suspected and eventually fired. It becomes something of an irony that Paul gets fired for something that he was not responsible for.
The irony of Paul's lack of consideration for Annika's disinterest
After Paul tells Annika that he would see her sometime later, he is quite sure that she would be or is disinterested in the same. In an attempt to avoid seeing her reaction, Paul quickly turns away. However, it becomes quite ironic that he feels her disinterest in the invitation after turning away like a gust of cold wind on his back. While turning away was meant to make Paul unaware of how Annika reacts, it is ironic that he still feels the same.
The irony of Vincent's name change
After Jonathan is arrested for the scheme that he was responsible for, where he scammed people of their savings and retirement benefits, Vincent changes her name as an attempt to have a different kind of life that is not tied down to Jonathan having been her girlfriend. However, while working as a cook on a freight ship, she gets disappeared without a trace. This is quite ironic since her name change was supposed to have a 'protective kind of effect,' but it fails.
The violin player
While at the bar, Paul notices just how poor the music there is. Even though the girl who plays the violin adds a new kind of flavor to the music, it becomes something of an irony that she stops playing the new piece of equipment despite the fact that it made a change to the music.
