Frank Gold
Frank Gold is a thirteen-year-old who has been diagnosed with polio. As a result, he is sent to a children's hospital called "The Golden Age," and meets a girl called Elsa there.
Elsa
Elsa has also been diagnosed with polio and has been sent to The Golden Age hospital, where she meets Frank. The two embark on a whirlwind romance which offers them both an escape from their life in the hospital.
Sister Olive Penny
Sister Olive is the senior nurse at The Golden Age hospital. She is depicted as being kind and caring towards the patients.
Frank's parents
Due to events of the Second World War, Frank's parents have had to move from Hungary to Australia, but find themselves feeling alienated from their new home.
