The Good Soldier Imagery

The Good Soldier Imagery

Hearing imagery

The narrator commences the narrative using hearing imagery to enable readers to comprehend the story's setting and plot. The narrator says, “This is the saddest story I have ever heard. We had known the Ashburnhams for nine seasons of the town of Nauheim with an extreme intimacy—or, rather, with an acquaintanceship as loose and easy and yet as close as a good glove's with your hand." The imagery is critical because it lets readers keep pace with the narrator's experiences and explorations.

Sight Imagery

Sight imagery is depicted when the narrator describes the woman’s bedroom and her nervousness. The narrator says, “Her room door was locked because she was nervous about thieves, but an electric contrivance on a cord was understood to be attached to her little wrist. She had only to press a bulb to raise the house."

The ocean breeze

The woman’s condition and aspirations are described using the ocean breeze imagery to help readers understand her mood and tone. The narrator says, “But the cool breezes of the ocean seemed to clear up that hatred as if it had been a curtain. They seemed to give him back admiration for her and respect.”
