The Good Woman of Setzuan

The Good Woman of Setzuan Different Spellings

The title of this play was first translated into English as "The Good Woman of Setzuan," as it appears in this Classic Note, by Eric Bentley in 1948. He maintains this translation in the 1961 edition.

However, John Willett uses the translation "The Good Person of Szechwan" in volume 6 of the 1967 series Brecht's Plays, Poetry, and Prose, which he edited with Ralph Manheim.

Michael Hofmann has since translated it as “The Good Person of Sichuan” in 1990 and as "The Good Soul of Szechuan" by David Harrower for his 2008 production at the Young Vic Theatre in London.
