Why does Ma keep referring to Pretty Boy Floyd?
Pretty Boy Floyd, to her, represents an Oklahoma man whose anger got the best of him. Because she was acquainted with his mother, he has a personal resonance for her: because he got so angry, the forces of society were able to keep him down. She doesn't want such a thing to happen to Tom, and so she is particularly responsive to Tom's anger or the possibility of it. Sometimes she seems to use her fear about Pretty Boy Floyd to know what might upset Tom better than Tom does himself.
