The Great Transformation is a nonfictional book by Karl Polanyi about the social and economic history. It was first published in the United States in 1944 by Farrar & Rinehart, and it is divided into three parts. It was later published in England under the name The Origins of Our Time in 1945. There have been several new editions after that time, often with notes and forewords by sociology professors and economists stating their science on the case.
In the book, the social and economic changes that the society went through during the Industrial Revolution are explained, as well as an ongoing critique on the government and the lack of liberation in the system. Market society is a concept brought up and discussed in to book as an ideal economic system as Polanyi believes that the government and the market economy shouldn’t have close ties the way they did in his era, and still do in many countries today.
Karl Paul Polanyi worked in the fields of economic sociology, history and anthropology, and he was an author of nonfictional books. He was born in the late 1800s and died in 1966, likely of old age.
