Mero Corn
He is the main character (protagonist) of the story who leaves his Wyoming infantile home and only returns after many years to attend his brother’s burial. Mero is an individual who has seen a lot in life and his success story is based on his hard work. After leaving home, he does a number of jobs and participates in politics. Therefore, he is an individual who is self-made. He marries more than thrice but this does not distract him from achieving his goals. However, life is good to him while away and never bothers to come home. He only comes after sixty years to pay last respect to his deceased brother, Rollo.
Rollo Corn
He is a brother to Mero Corn who falls in love with their father’s girlfriend. However, the details of his love story with his father’s girlfriend is undetailed because Mero left home many years ago. However, Rollo impregnated his father’s girlfriend and fathered a son. Rollo sells their family ranch and at last it ends up to a businessman who converted it into a tourist destination for animals called emus. At last, Rollo repossess the ranch but got killed by a emu. Mero is compelled to come home after many years to attend Rollo’s burial.
Mero’s Father (The Old Man)
The old man is the father to Mero Corn and Rollo Corn. He is an alcoholic and his sons feel that they do not have a role model. He gives up ranching to be a mailperson. Mero and Rollo are not happy with their father’s decision to give up ranching. He has a girlfriend who is coveted by Rollo. According to Mero, the old man is a horse who loves young women. Mero is disgusted with his father’s behavior and decides to go away to start a new life but only returns home after 60 years.
The Girlfriend
She is the old man’s fiancée fond of narrating stories with her enthralling soft voice to the Corn men. She often tells stories regarding the Tin Head. Her stories are interesting that Mero remembers them even after sixty years later. According to Mero, this girlfriend is a flirt because she falls in love with his younger brother, Rollo.
Tin Head
He is first mentioned by the Mero’s father girlfriend. He is unlucky because he is inundated by bad luck. He has an injury in his head and that is why his skull has a metal plate. According to the girlfriend’s narration, Tin Head’s animals in the ranch suffer inexplicable alterations.
The Anthropologist
Not much is said about the anthropologist but Mero remembers seeing him during his childhood. At some point, Mero recalls that when his father instructed the anthropologist to show him some hillside paintings.
