    Who caused the writing on the wall?

    Some students may argue that the writing on the wall is the work of an apparition, the ghost of any one of the women who have died in the house. The evidence of this is in that the writing always seems to occur when all four residents are together, lounging or exploring. Plus, these students may also argue that it is commonly known that the house is haunted. Other students may argue, like some literature scholars, that Eleanor does the writing herself.
