What does Zaphod's reaction to the hitchhikers reveal about his character?
Zaphod initially thinks Trillian picked up the hitchhikers, and it makes him unhappy. Even when she explains that it was the ship that did it, he wishes it hadn't. He doesn't admit that he wished they'd rather died in space, but it seems clear he'd prefer that. This demonstrates Zaphod's selfishness and self-preservation instincts.
