Why is Hayley always on edge?
Hayley is always on edge because that is the way she has been raised to be. She has looked up to her father all her life and thus learnt to imitate him. Her father is on edge because of the Iraq war he served in, and he is now plagued with depression and PTSD. In addition, Hayley wishes to make sure her father always is cared for, so she never lets her guard down.

How does Finn break through Hayley's shell?
Finn, being an understanding person and knowing that people aren't angry for no reason, is very considerate of Hayley. He talks slowly to her, making sure she is comfortable, and doesn't mind that she tries sending him on his way. He understands when a person needs help and is there to assist her.

Why does Hayley's fathers mental health spiral down?
Hayley's father has PTSD after the war and life itself is very hard. He has a hard time understanding why people around him are living soundly, while his life was on the line. He has started questioning his own existence, and doesn't understand why he should live if he doesn't enjoy it anyway. His mental heath gets even worse, to the dismay of Hayley, when his wife moves back in, who has never been much help.
