Is Jurgis a likable character? Does he act in any way (particularly in the final seven chapters) that could compromise his likability?
Students should analyze his behavior in the country, his decision to resort to crime, and his decision to work as a scab. Some may argue that while he starts the novel off with integrity and concern for others, he becomes weak-minded and resorts to stealing, drinking, and taking prostitutes - things that reflect his true character. Others may argue that these things happen in response to true hardship, and that his turn to socialism in the ends reflects a more likable response to his external conflicts.
