The King
The story opens with a mystical image of the King sitting in the middle of his throne room, surrounded by his faithful subjects. Every person in the room looks towards the King with awe and respect and he is seen as the supreme authority. This image of the King as a type of God is important here because it is used to highlight the power and influence a single person held.
The Knight
Apart from the figure of the King, the knights are the ones who occupy an important role in the story. The knights are portrayed here as the embodiment of bravery and honor and their opinion are always listened to by the other characters because they hold the moral high ground. The way these characters are portrayed is important imagery here and is frequently used by the author to argue that even when a knight gets involved in an action that is far from being honorable, that person is still without fail and the reader does not have the right to criticize him.
The women
One of the main characters in the story is the daughter of the King and she eventually ends up having a lot of power in the kingdom after her father named her his successor and the only heir to the throne. The process is among the only female characters mentioned here but is important to analyze the way they are portrayed. These women are always painted as being chaste and out of this world. While the men busy themselves with politics, the women are more interested in the spiritual. This way of portraying women presents them as fragile beings who are always in the need of being protected.
Power is evil
Another important imagery which we find in the story is the way in which the idea of power is presented. In this context, power is described as something which is almost exclusively evil and which has immense power to corrupt. However, power, or rather the presence of people who hold immense power, are seen as a necessary evil and should be accepted and worked around them because they are essential for the well-being of the normal world.
