The Labyrinth of Solitude Imagery

Imagery to depict the sense of sight (The purity of the sky)

As the story progresses, the author uses imagery to appeal to the sense of sight to the reader. For instance, the author writes:

“At first sight, the visitor is surprised not only by the purity of the sky and the ugliness of the dispersed and the ostentatious buildings but also by the city's vaguely Mexican atmosphere which cannot be captured in words or concepts"

Imagery depicting a sense of hearing

Paz uses sound to depict the sense of hearing to the reader. For instance, he narrates:

“The pachuco is impassive and contemptuous, allowing all these contradictory impressions to accumulate around him until finally, with a certain painful satisfaction; he sees them explode into a tavern fight or raid by the police or a riot”

Exploding into tavern depicts sound, which makes the reader better comprehend the story and be eager to know what happens next as he reads through the story.

Imagery depicting the sense of taste

The writer notes that the young generation in both France and North America has a taste of fashion by dressing in a certain universal style. The writer states:

"When I arrived in France in 1945, I was amazed to find that the young men and women of certain quarters, especially students and artists wore clothing reminiscent of that of the Pachucos in Southern California"

Imagery depicting a sense of hearing

The writer narrates that a Mexican sometimes finds himself in a state of confusion and does not understand what life manifests in itself. The author uses sound to appeal the sense of hearing to the reader. For example, the author writes:

“Therefore he shouts or keeps silent, stabs or prays, or falls asleep for hundred years”.

Imagery of sound

To appeal the sense of hearing in the story, the author has used explosion of voices. For instance, he writes:

“In the hubbub of a fiesta night our voices explode into brilliant lights, and death and life mingle together, while their vitality becomes a fixed smile that denies old age and death but that changes life to motionless stone”
