Manipulation of Theatrical Structures and Forms in 'Angels in America' and 'The Laramie Project' Rose Helena Lowrie 12th Grade

Both plays The Laramie Project and Angels in America were revolutionary in terms of their content and the way in which they reinvented theatrical styles, structures and forms. These productions have had an everlasting impact on audiences after their original productions, influencing new generations through their manipulation of theatrical structures and forms. These plays focus on the voice of the suffering and the importance of community to create a platform for the gay community and their struggles within society. The original Angels in America was performed in the Eureka Theatre in San Francisco in 1991 and till this day has had many new productions including the National Theatre company’s production in 2018. Similarly, the original Tectonic Theatre Project performance of The Laramie Project in 2000 has been adapted over the past 20 years with a recent 2019 Waterfront Theatre Company production sharing this empowering story. These productions significant plays of the 20th Century manipulated theatrical structures and forms to present ideas in new ways.
