He is the novel's chracter that attempts to convince Mattia that there are no limits to consciousness and that any conceived boundaries are in fact imaginary.
The novel may contain biographical elements, but all in all the plot, well constructed as it is is more a vision of Pirandello's philosophical outlook than anything else. It isn't meant to be an autobiography.
