The Lowland is a story that evaluates the lives of Udayan and Subhash. Udayan and Subhash are born in India. At an early age, the boys are close to each other. However, the characters become distant when they get admitted to college. Udayan becomes radical and joins the Naxalite movement. Naxalite is a splinter group of the ruling party alleging to fight for the rights of the poor. The group is against the oppression of low-class people by the authorities. Subhash does not involve himself with politics. The moment he perceives political danger, he leaves for America to pursue a Ph.D.
The two brothers are used to exchanging letters. Udayan informs his elder brother that he has married a woman called Gauri. Subhash feels beaten by his young brother. In America, Subhash starts dating a married lady called Holly. The relationship does not last for long. Before long, Subhash gets a letter from his parents informing him about the death of Udayan. The Indian police killed Udayan due to his radical stand. Subhash flies back to India to attend his brother’s funeral. He finds his parents devastated by the sudden death of Udayan. Subhash also discovers that his parents don’t like Gauri. Therefore, he convinces her to travel with him to the U.S.
Subhash returns to the U.S with Gauri, who is now pregnant. Within a short period, Gauri gives birth to a baby girl named Bela. However, things take a turn, and Subhash and Gauri start having differences. Gauri begins studying philosophy. She concentrates much on studies making the relationship between her and Bela deteriorate. Subhash receives a report about his father’s death. He travels to India with Bela leaving behind Gauri. After the burial, Subhash and Bela get back to the U.S. The two discover that Gauri has relocated to California.
Bela is affected by her mother’s absence. However, she adjusts and studies up to college. Once Bela completes her college education, she starts working on farms. One day, Subhash tells Bela about her birth parents. Initially, she is devastated but eventually chose to forgive them. Bela becomes pregnant and gives birth to a baby girl called Meghna. Subhash also dates and marries Elise Silva. Gauri returns to Calcutta to let go of the past. Upon returning to California, she gets a letter from Bela, who now wants to meet her with Meghna.
